it's back! [17 May 2008|09:54pm]
[ mood | delighted ]
[ music | the unbelievable loudness of frogs ]

My beloved Macbook was sent away for service on Tuesday (display backlight flickering) and was delivered back into my hands this afternoon. Though they charged me for the service, Apple seems to have done a bang-up job in repairing the device. They replaced a number of components, not all of which were relevant to the display problem. They found some defective RAM and replaced it, they replaced the logic board in a successful effort to resolve the display issue, and they also completely replaced my top case! This gives me a new, grime-free keyboard, trackpad and wrist rest!

Go Apple!

Of course, [info]rjl20 beat me in computer nerdiness. He'll probably also beat me in shelf building, but I thank him for passively kicking me in the butt to get started on my garage shelving project.

Resurrecting the skillz [11 Feb 2007|11:33pm]
[ mood | accomplished ]

Having obtained a quorum of tools, I've started to rebuild my woodworking skills. My first project was a bookcase built out of 3/4" hardwood veneer plywood:

The glass door is from IKEA, and it locks with a magnetic tot lok.

The second project was a simple TV stand thrown together out of 2x4s and upholstered with some random batting and fabric that we picked up at Joanne's.

The primary purpose of this was to raise the TV enough that the gate that keeps EJ away from it doesn't block our view of it. Our first thought after installing it, having screwed the TV down to it and also tied the TV to the back wall, was that we probably now didn't need the gate, since the boy can't reach the TV. :) We're sticking with the gate, though. The stereo cabinets don't lock and I've gotten used to being able to drop baby-unfriendly crap over there.

Project number three is likely to be a 1/2 or 1/4 scale practice wall.

SCHOOLS MUST TELL CHILDREN THAT 1 + 1 MIGHT EQUAL 69! [12 Jan 2007|06:13pm]
[ mood | revolting ]

It's a bunch of made-up nonsense that 1 + 1 == 2. Anti-religious extremists made up the mathematics and have since decreed that 1 + 1 MUST equal 2. The Lord our God describes in his Bible that he is "all powerful", and therefore may at any time cause 1 + 1 to equal 69. This equal but opposing view to "1 + 1 == 2" MUST be presented to students in all publicly funded classes! Free speech dictates that my nonsense has every right to be heard!

In exactly the same vein, you'd better tell kids that the Earth is 14,000 years old, that man did not evolve from apes, and that God Himself has created All This Shit. God even Created ME, who is spelling out His Word as a Complete Load Of Bullshit! PRAISE ALLAH OR WHATEVER!

P.S. If any public schools ever require EJ to recite the pledge of allegiance, I will, at minimum, require him to replace "under God" with something like "orthoganal to god" or "irrespective of god", or maybe "despite all this god nonsense". Have fun deterring me, school board. Look forward to LOTS of fun.

If it is your belief that, at any point in human history, you could have put a carpenter and a leper in a room together and later have wound up with fewer lepers than you started with, then I not-so-humbly request that you stay off of any school boards. At the very least, stay the fuck off of MY kids' school boards.

wtf is wrong with you people? [15 Feb 2006|01:31am]
[ mood | antisocial ]

If one is a devotee of X, how can one be driven to perform acts that X would find horrific? How can you believe that the son of God wants you to explode buildings containing doctors, nurses and young pregnant women? Think the Prophet wants you to riot over a cartoon? Does galactic overlord Xenu really want all those body thetans removed? Why does Hale-Bopp want you to die? Do you honestly believe that a true student of the Jedi arts would let a skin condition like that go untreated?

Lister: This is terrible. Holy wars. Killing. They're just using religion as an excuse to be extremely crappy to each other.
Toaster: So, what else is new?

I've had a Griffin iMic for a couple of years now, but I bought it on a whim and soon discovered that I didn't really have any use for it. I bought it to get an audio input device for my Powerbook, but I never wound up using it at all.

Lately, one of the most irritating things about my VGA & USB switched Mac/PC setup at home was that I had to crawl around behind the desk to swap the speakers between the systems. I have a couple of extra sets of speakers around, but none so lovely and powerful as my old Caimbridge Soundworks set, and so none that I wanted to use. Lo and behold, iMic to the rescue! I hooked the little bugger up to my USB hub and both devices recognize it instantly. Along with my video, keyboard and mouse, I now have switched sound! Hazzah!

[ mood | excited ]

I just picked up the first console game I've purchased in quite some time: Ultimate Spiderman. Thanks to [info]jakeaidan, I've read a number of the Ultimate Spiderman comics. Best comics I've ever read, and one of the most fun video games I've ever played. You get to zip around the city as Spidey, beating up thugs, making it to class on time, putting in your time at the Bugle, and battling big-time super-villains. You also get to jump around as Venom, sucking the life out of law enforcement personnel and tossing cars through windows. I prefer for the former, but enjoy them both!

And Jesus spake, saying unto them "Hate others, for they are different from yourselves".

Oh, wait. No, he fucking did not.

Setting aside that most people are just assholes anyway, I don't find an overabundance of assholes among the Christians I know personally. Why is it that all the Christian organizations are populated with douchebags of such mythological proportion? Is it just that the dickheads are the only ones who get press? Anybody know of any tolerable Christian organizations, aside from local churches?

superhero or stroke? [22 Jul 2005|05:40am]
[ mood | uneasy ]
[ music | U2, Running to Stand Still ]

I woke up today with pins-and-needles and numbness in the fingertips of my left hand. An hour and a half later, it still has not gone away, though it might be a little better (or I might just be getting used to it). In the shower, I noticed a lovely spider bite just above my wedding ring on my left hand (excellent two-fang pattern in red surrounded by a disc of white). My first thought was that I must be experiencing the first stages of my transformation from Erick Hammersmark, mild mannered network engineer, to Spiderman, and that I would get to spend most of the day discovering my powers and developing my character. Upon further reflection, it seems much more likely that I have a pinched nerve somewhere, or that I'm developing the dreaded carpal tunnel syndrome.

The Deviant Geek
You answered 82% of the questions as a geek truly would.
You're a geek and you know it. You've got all sorts of fringe hobbies and socially unacceptable tendencies. Chances are, whenever possible, you hate to be grouped with other people and sometimes go out of your way just to be different.

You're smart too. You're more willing to depend on your own brainpower to solve problems, instead of relying on others to pull you through life. You probably read a lot, and generally enjoy learning new things.

So what's it all mean? You may be considered by some to be uncool, but you probably don't care either. In social situations you may be either slightly passive or slightly loud (geeks always fall into the extremes).

In a nutshell, you answered enough questions correctly supporting a geek philosophy to be considered a more potent geek than 60% of the population.

you're gonna lose your mind, they told me [15 Jul 2005|05:28am]
Though I'm not in a particularly unpleasant mood this morning, people's idiocy and hypocrisy are pissing me off more than usual.

Two high-profile U.S. senators, Joseph Lieberman and Hillary Rodham Clinton, are incensed over pornographic content "hidden" in the popular video game "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," and are demanding action from either the government or the game's maker.

Stealing cars, shooting people to death, beating up prostitutes? Hey, it's just a game.
The President making love to his girlfriend? Hey, it was just a BJ!
A video game character making love to his girlfriend? I DEMAND ACTION FROM THE GOVERNMENT!

STFU, HRC, D-NY. STFU.

[ music | Barenaked Ladies - If I Had a Million Dollars ]

As many of you may know, on June the 12th, [info]sarahlemon and I were married. We had a fantastic wedding, and many thanks to those who made it all the more special by sharing it with us. When we get our photos back from Duet, I will post them (or some of them, anyway) here.

Following the wedding, our trip to France! Five nights in Paris, le TGV to Nice, five nights there, a quick flight back to the city of lights, then one more night before the 23 hour trip home. We had an absolutely wonderful time. I took an absurd amount of photos, but I've managed to narrow it down to best hundred or so.
